Definition List
Definition lists consist of terms as list markers, which are associated with details in the list entries.
The definition list is an essential tool to structure textual content on a small scale. We only have one Markdown syntax structure, but the theme offers styling options that make a big difference.
Syntax

: Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and
Consonantia, there live the blind texts.

Every list item begins with one or more terms. The lines after them contain the details starting with a colon followed by a space. An empty line between the list items is mandatory.
Layout
The layout has to consider the length and number of all the components. The default version is working with every combination of terms and descriptions the additional options are not. The tight style suits single terms with details, which do usually not exceed one line on larger screens. The loose style is intended for terms with extensive details.
Standard
The standard layout resembles the default style of common browsers:
- First Term
- Fickle bog dwarves jinx empathy quiz. Sex prof gives back no quiz with mild joy. Few black taxis drive up major roads on quiet hazy nights.
- Fox dwarves chop my talking quiz job. Waltz, nymph, for quick jigs vex Bud! Foxy parsons quiz and cajole the lovably dim wiki-girl.
- Second Term with
- Term Alternative
- Twelve ziggurats quickly jumped a finch box. Bright vixens jump; dozy fowl quack. Lovak won the squad prize cup for sixty big jumps.
This style looks especially well as a literature list for example:
- Horkheimer, Max und Theodor W. Adorno
- Dialektik der Aufklärung: Philosophische Fragmente. 18. Aufl. Frankfurt am Main: Fischer Taschenbuch Verl., 2009.
- Wiener, Norbert
- Kybernetik: Regelung und Nachrichtenübertragung im Lebewesen und in der Maschine. Econ classics. Düsseldorf: ECON-Verl., 1992.
Tight
For a list with short single terms and only one short definition, a tighter is probably more suitable. We apply it with the attribute {.dl-tight}
:
- First
- When zombies arrive, quickly fax judge Pat.
- Second
- Hick dwarves jam blitzing foxy quip.
Loose
Short terms with long descriptions will look better with a loose style, that is applied by the attribute {.dl-loose}
- First term
- As quirky joke, chefs won’t pay devil magic zebra tax. Sympathizing would fix Quaker objectives. My jocks box, get hard, unzip, quiver, flow.
- Fix problem quickly with galvanized jets. Quest judge wizard bonks foxy chimp love. Public junk dwarves quiz mighty fox.
- Second term
- How razorback-jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts! Sex prof gives back no quiz with mild joy. Heavy boxes perform quick waltzes and jigs.
In the case we need a little more space for the terms, we can apply .dl-loose3
. The normal loose style reserves a quarter of the full text width for terms — with this attribute we get one third:
- First very long term
- Lovak won the squad prize cup for sixty big jumps. Quirky spud boys can jam after zapping five worthy Polysixes. Grumpy wizards make a toxic brew for the jovial queen.
- Big fjords vex quick waltz nymph. A very big box sailed up then whizzed quickly from Japan. By Jove, my quick study of lexicography won a prize.
- Second very long term
- Heavy boxes perform quick waltzes and jigs. Levi Lentz packed my bag with six quarts of juice. Pack my red box with five dozen quality jugs.
Icon list
When can also use icons to define the aspects of our structured information. The attribute {.dl-icon}
provides a fitting layout. Often the corresponding details are short, so we can combine the attribute with a column layout. Therefor, the attribute set here is {.dl-icon .col2}
