Definition List
Definition lists consist of terms as list markers, which are associated with details in the list entries.
The definition list is an essential tool to structure textual content on a small scale. We only have one Markdown syntax structure, but the theme offers styling options that make a big difference.
Syntax

Every list item begins with one or more terms. The lines after them contain the details starting with a colon followed by a space. An empty line between the list items is mandatory.
Layout
The layout has to consider the length and number of all the components. The default version is working with every combination of terms and descriptions the additional options are not. The tight style suits single terms with details, which do usually not exceed one line on larger screens. The loose style is intended for terms with extensive details.
Standard
The standard layout resembles the default style of common browsers:
- First Term
- Nymphs blitz quick vex dwarf jog. Foxy parsons quiz and cajole the lovably dim wiki-girl. When zombies arrive, quickly fax judge Pat.
- My faxed joke won a pager in the cable TV quiz show. “Now fax quiz Jack!” my brave ghost pled. Fickle bog dwarves jinx empathy quiz.
- Second Term with
- Term Alternative
- Blowzy red vixens fight for a quick jump. Do wafting zephyrs quickly vex Jumbo? Have a pick: twenty-six letters — no forcing a jumbled quiz!
This style looks especially well as a literature list for example:
- Horkheimer, Max und Theodor W. Adorno
- Dialektik der Aufklärung: Philosophische Fragmente. 18. Aufl. Frankfurt am Main: Fischer Taschenbuch Verl., 2009.
- Wiener, Norbert
- Kybernetik: Regelung und Nachrichtenübertragung im Lebewesen und in der Maschine. Econ classics. Düsseldorf: ECON-Verl., 1992.
Tight
For a list with short single terms and only one short definition, a tighter is probably more suitable. We apply it with the attribute {.dl-tight}
:
- First
- Jack, love my big wad of sphinx quartz!
- Second
- Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes.
Loose
Short terms with long descriptions will look better with a loose style, that is applied by the attribute {.dl-loose}
- First term
- Quest judge wizard bonks foxy chimp love. Back in June we delivered oxygen equipment of the same size. Show mangled quartz flip vibe exactly.
- Pack my red box with five dozen quality jugs. Bored? Craving a pub quiz fix? Why, just come to the Royal Oak! Big dwarves heckle my top quiz of jinx.
- Second term
- Boxers had zap of gay jock love, quit women. Bright vixens jump; dozy fowl quack. A very bad quack might jinx zippy fowls.
In the case we need a little more space for the terms, we can apply .dl-loose3
. The normal loose style reserves a quarter of the full text width for terms — with this attribute we get one third:
- First very long term
- “Now fax quiz Jack!” my brave ghost pled. Public junk dwarves hug my quartz fox. Fake bugs put in wax jonquils drive him crazy.
- Just keep examining every low bid quoted for zinc etchings. Five hexing wizard bots jump quickly. JCVD might pique a sleazy boxer with funk.
- Second very long term
- Fax back Jim’s Gwyneth Paltrow video quiz. A quick movement of the enemy will jeopardize six gunboats. The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog.
Icon list
When can also use icons to define the aspects of our structured information. The attribute {.dl-icon}
provides a fitting layout. Often the corresponding details are short, so we can combine the attribute with a column layout. Therefor, the attribute set here is {.dl-icon .col2}
